Documentation

From the first account to a complete money workspace.

These guides explain how Spendful’s records connect, what each workflow changes and what to review when the numbers look unexpected.

01

Getting started

Create the source records before relying on reports.
  1. Set preferences. Choose the timezone, base currency, normal budget period and payday that reporting should use.
  2. Add an account. Create bank, credit, cash, savings, investment or loan accounts with the correct currency and opening balance.
  3. Add transactions. Enter records manually, transfer between compatible accounts or import a statement.
  4. Review the dashboard. Select the correct year and period before comparing totals.

02

Import statements

Spendful supports PDF, CSV and TXT files from multiple banks.

Select the bank before choosing the file. Spendful parses account and transaction details using the selected statement format.

If the statement contains an account or category that does not yet exist, the import can create it. Review the import summary and confirm the resulting balances, dates and signs.

Password-protected or image-only PDFs may not contain extractable text. Export a text-based statement from the bank when possible.

03

Categories and rules

Categories explain the transaction; rules make repeated descriptions predictable.

Create expense, income or savings categories and organise them under parent groups where helpful. Correct a transaction at any time without changing the original description.

Category rules match description text and can be reapplied to uncategorised or existing transactions. Use specific phrases to avoid matching unrelated merchants.

04

Budgets, goals and debt

Planning tools use the same records as the dashboard.
  • Traditional budgets compare category spending with a chosen limit.
  • Envelope allocations assign available money to categories and can carry balances forward.
  • Goals track a target amount and date against recorded contributions.
  • Debt tracking and payoff calculations compare repayment approaches using the values supplied.

05

Analytics and reporting

Always confirm the period and currency before interpreting a trend.

Analytics summarise income, expenses, category spending, trends, investments and forecasts. The financial-health page combines several indicators into one review surface.

Forecasts are estimates based on recorded history and scheduled items. They are not guarantees or professional financial advice.

06

Preferences and currency

The base currency controls consolidated reporting, not the currency stored on each account.

Each account keeps its own three-letter currency code. Exchange rates convert account and transaction values into the chosen base currency for combined totals.

If a consolidated total is incomplete, review missing-rate warnings and refresh or enter the required exchange rate in Settings.

07

Export and deletion

Keep a copy of your records before permanently removing the account.

Pro users can download a complete JSON export of the financial data connected to their account from Settings. Store exported files securely because they can contain sensitive financial history.

Account deletion is permanent. Read the confirmation carefully and export anything you need first.

API availability

Spendful does not currently offer a supported public developer API. Use the account export for portability and do not build against private application endpoints, which can change without notice.
